Hongkongers said their goodbyes to the iconic Jumbo Floating Restaurant on Tuesday as it set sail from its home of 46 years.

At around 12pm, workers on two tugboats began to move the restaurant boat away from the Aberdeen South Typhoon Shelter.

Many took to social media to bid farewell to the beloved icon.

The parent company of the restaurant, Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises, recently said that it has found a suitable berth for the boat, but would not disclose the specific storage location in order to avoid interruption of the maintenance process and other business activities at the new dock.

The company announced last month that the famed floating restaurant would leave Hong Kong in June after it failed to find an operator and a dry dock in the city where it could carry out large-scale inspection and maintenance. It is also facing huge financial losses due to falling tourist numbers sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company had said the boat would be parked outside of Hong Kong to lower costs while it waits for a new operator.

Following the news of its departure, the kitchen of the restaurant toppled and partially sank in the Aberdeen South Typhoon Shelter.
